Modelling the human mind

Modelling the human mind by AI robs us of our free will and choice.

This is really scary stuff most unlike the science fiction stories in the novels written by Isaac Asimov. They were creative and did not encroach our personal space. Most unlike mind modelling AI. Yet no one seems to care about the AI direct challenge to our own cognitive capabilities any more.

It seems like we have surrendered to AI instead of making AI our lever for our own good. It could well turn out to be a surrender if do not take heed of the threatening developments being made using the powerful compute and intelligent foundations available to AI today.

A new AI model has been created with out of the box thinking by scientists. What it does is try and replicate the human mind and predict the choices we make. This has happened very quickly because the creators used a Large Language Model (LLM) as the base for building a trained “human mind function” on top of that.

The researchers created an AI use case called “Centaur” by fine-tuning Meta’s Llama 3.1 70B language model on a dataset called Psych-101, which contains trial-by-trial behavioral data from 160 psychological experiments involving over 60,000 participants making more than 10 million choices.

It is reportedly extremely accurate at predicting the choices humans make. Centaur outperformed existing domain-specific cognitive models in almost every experiment when predicting behavior of held-out participants.

The next step is easy to predict. It will be modeling your mind and mine specifically.

Would you like that? it is one of the greatest intrusions into our privacy possible. It will take away our individuality and differences which are both our strengths and weaknesses and put us on truly unfamiliar territory. That’s why data is being collected from our mobile phones about users through passive listening. Complicated mobile and operating system settings are designed to make it extremely difficult to opt out of advanced AI functions even if one wants to. As an example, opting out of face recognition in iPhone has been made very difficult.

In spite of these dire challenges being made to our existence, we seem to be extremely blase about acting in our own interests. Why is this?

One is ignorance of AI by the common people. Second reason is the non regulation of AI by governments. Third is prioritizing innovation over all else to fuel competition and maximize venture capital returns. Are we waiting for a crisis to happen? Crises such as a race to build AI systems for the most advanced national defensive and offensive weapons systems are already underway. Are we waiting for citizens displaced from their jobs with no Universal Basic Income to storm their Governments or Big Technology companies?

As human beings each of us has free will and free choice in our lives. It seems that we have reached the point where it is highly probable that unless we stop it, free will and choice will be taken away from us -sooner than later.
